ADMISSION INTO GRADUATE PROGRAMME 2011/2012

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into Graduate programmes in the 2011/2012 academic year leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, MPhil and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees of the University of Calabar.
A. GENERAL REGULATIONS
Courses may be offered full-time or part-time. All programmes begin with coursework and end with a project for Graduate Diploma or thesis for Masters and Ph.D degrees. For full-time studies in most programmes, the postgraduate diploma lasts for one calendar year, the Masters degrees last for 2 years and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes extend over a minimum of 3 years. Part-time programmes take a much longer time. Candidates with Masters degree from recognized universities may credit the relevant courses towards the Ph.D programme, provided the quality of the grade is acceptable to the Graduate School. Candidates are required to have a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5-point scale and 2.75 on 4-point scale for Masters programmes and 4.00 on a 5-point scale and 3.00 on a 4-point scale for Ph.D programmes.
B. SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR MPhil/Ph.D CANDIDATES
The MPhil/Ph.D option is available for all programmes. Candidates may be admitted into the MPhil/PhD programme in exceptional circumstances where the CGPA in the Masters degree is lower than the minimum required B (60%) average or 4.00 on a 5-point scale. The MPhil/Ph.D option will also be available to candidates interested in pursuing PhD programmes in fields different from but relevant to that in which they obtained their Masters degree. A terminal MPhil degree will be awarded if the candidate fails to make the minimum required to transit to the Ph.D programme.
C. MODE OF APPLICATION
Interested candidates are to first log on to our website http://www.unicalonline.edu.ng to access the prospectus for the complete description of available courses.
Thereafter, candidates are required to pay a non-refundable form application fee of N10,000 by E-tranzact at any branch of the underlisted banks nationwide. A printout will be issued at the bank with a Confirmation Order number. Candidates would then enter their Confirmation Order number and their email or mobile phone numbers on the website to access the form. Follow the steps by providing your data as prompted and ensure that your form is submitted. YOU ARE TO PRINT OUT A COPY OF YOUR FORM BY CLICKING ON PRINT button after submission. Please bring a copy of the printed form and photocopies of your credentials to the screening.
The banks include: Enterprise Bank (former Spring Bank), First Bank Plc, UBA Plc, Sterling Bank Plc, Syke Bank, Zenith Bank, First City Monument Bank, Ecobank Plc.
D. CONCEPT NOTE
As part of the admission requirements, candidates for Masters, MPhil/Ph.D and Ph.D degrees are expected to submit a CONCEPT NOTE outlining the candidate’s research proposal or statement of research interest. This should not be longer than one and a half pages for Masters and three pages for Doctoral candidates. Candidates for all PGD programmes as well as MBA, MPAS and MPA degrees are excluded from submission of concept note.
E. TRANSCRIPTS
Candidates are to ensure that their academic transcripts are forwarded by their previous institutions to the Secretary, Graduate School, University of Calabar, P.M.B. 1115, Calabar, Cross River State, on or before deadline indicated below.
F. ADMISSION SCREENING EXERCISE
All candidates are also expected to take part in the Admission screening exercise which will take place on Saturday, December 10, 2011 as follows: Part A – Written (Use of English Language and General Knowledge); Part B – Oral interview in the respective Departments (based on subject area).

(i) Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (at least a third class) in Agriculture and related disciplines.
ii) Higher National Diploma (HND) (Lower Credit) in Agriculture and related disciplines.
(b) M.Sc in Agricultural Economics:
(i) Candidates must hold a first degree in Agricultural Economics or related discipline from the University of Calabar or any other university recognized by the Senate, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75/4 or 3.0 over 5.
(c) M.Sc in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology:
(i) Candidates must hold a first degree in either Agricultural Extension, Agricultural Economics or Agricultural Education from the University of Calabar or any other university recognized by the Senate, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75/4 or 3.0 over 5.
(d) Ph.D in Agricultural Economics
(i) Candidates for the Ph.D in Agricultural Economics in any of the fields of specialization must hold an M.Sc in Agricultural Economics with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 over 4 or 4.0 over 5. Candidates who have CGPA’s a little lower than these will be considered for an M.Phil Ph.D.
(e) Ph.D in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development candidates applying for a Ph.D in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development must be holders of M.Sc in Agricultural Extension with a minimum CGPA of 3.0/4 or 4.0/5.0. Candidates with slightly lower CGPA’s will be considered for the MPhil Ph.D.

b) M.Sc. Programme
i. Students for the M.SC. programme must have a good first degree in Agriculture or related science course. A minimum of second class lower degree with CGPA of 3.00 is required on a point scale or 2.75 on a 4 point scale.
ii. Graduate with less than 2.75 or 3.00 but with a Post Graduate diploma in crop Production or crop Protection with an average score of 60% or 3.00 cumulative averages.
c) Ph.D programme
Students for Ph.D programme must have a good Master of Science Degree (M.SC.) in agriculture or related discipline.

3. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

a) A good first degree in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Health, Education, Environmental and Basic Sciences with CGPA not below 3.00
b) Candidates for PhD must possess a Masters Degree in specialization areas relevant to Theatre, Media, Communication and Development Studies. To qualify for admission into the MA Programmes, candidates must possess a goon first degree iii the areas specified in (a) above.

The PGDE programme is run on Full-time basis and lasts for one Academic Session. Also, NTI graduates who have Bachelors in any field with a minimum of CGPA of 1.60 are eligible for PGDE. PGDE certificate from NTI is accepted for Masters if it meets the general requirements of the Graduate School. In such cases, the usual 5 credit passes including Mathematics and English at O-level is a requirement.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (PGDEE)
The Department of Curriculum and Teaching offers a programme of study leading to the award of PGD in Environmental Education (PGDEE). The PGDEE is a one-year programme for holders of first and higher degrees and two years for applicants with HND or its equivalent.

Admission into Ph.D degree programme is open to candidates who hold the M.Ed degree from the Universities approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar.

Admission Requirements:
(A) PGDPHE
Candidates for the PGDPHE Programme must have acquired
(i) First degree in course that are not related to Physical and Health Education programme
(ii) First degree in Physical and Health Education programme with a CGPA that is lower than entry requirements for the M.Ed programme.
(B) M.Ed. Degree
(i) Candidates for M.Ed degree shall have acquire first Degree in Physical and Health Education, university of Calabar or other recognized University with at least one year post qualification experience in teaching or in an educational agency.
(ii) Candidates who have acquired first degree in Nursing Science or environmental Education from the University of Calabar or other recognized universities with at least one year post-qualification experience. This category of candidates shall however be made to offer four foundation courses (two per semester) in Physical and Health Education.
(iii) Candidates with degree in disciplines other than the above who posses, in addition, Postgraduate Diploma in Physical and Health Education (PGDPHE) or Advance Diploma in Sports Administration Nigeria Institute for Sports (NIS);
(iv) Any other candidate whose qualification competence and experience for the proposed course of study have been approved by Senate.
(C) The Ph.D Degree
(i) Admission to Ph.D programme in Physical and Health Education, is open to all candidates who have earned M.Ed. in Physical and Health Education of the University of Calabar or other approved Universities.
(ii) Candidates who have earned Masters degree in Public Health or Special Education from University of Calabar or other recognized Universities. These category of candidates who do not have Physical and Health Education background shall be made to offer four foundation courses (two per semester) in Physical and Health Education.
(iii) Candidates in M. Ed. In Physical and Health Education programme that satisfy the Graduate School requirements for advancement may similarly be considered.

DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE
1. Postgraduate Diploma in Fisheries and Aquaculture which is a one-academic session programme will admit First Degree holders in Zoology, Biology, Fisheries or Aquaculture, Higher National Diploma (HND) holders in Fisheries and Aquaculture and relevant sciences who have two-years post qualification experience are also eligible for admission.
COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES
DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY
Programmes leading to PGD, M.Sc and Ph.D Degrees in Anatomy are available.
Entry Requirements
PGD programme
i In addition to O-level requirement for admission into the University, the candidates for admission into the PGD programme in Anatomy must have B.Sc second class lower division with a CGP lower than 3.00 or third class (Hons) degree in the subject of Anatomy of the University of Calabar or any other University approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar.
ii B.Sc second class degree in any related science discipline such as Physiology, Biochemistry, Animal Science, Radiography and Zoology from the University of Calabar or any other University approved by the Senate of University of Calabar.
iii NIST Final certificate or equivalent in Anatomy and Histophathology at creit level or above.
M.Sc Programme
i The programme is open to candidates with first class honors or second (Hons) with cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of not less than 3.0 in Anatomy of the University of Calabar or any other University offering B.Sc. Anatomy as approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar. Candidates with qualification in Medicine and Surgery (MBBCH), Radiography and Density (B.DS) are also eligible provided their final result is equivalent of cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.00.
ii The following fields of specialization are available for the M.Sc. programme: Teratology, Histochemistry, Neurobiology, Developmental Biology, Comparative anatomy and Physical Anthropology.
Ph.D programme
i Master of Science degree in Anatomy with a minimum of 3.0 cumulative point average (CGPA) on a scale of 4.00, and 4.0 on a scale of 5-point.
ii The following fields of specialization are available for the Ph.D programme: Neutrobiology, Radiographic and Clinical Anatomy, Physical Anthropology and Dermatoglyphics, Histochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Human Genetics, Developmental Biology and Tetratology.
DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY
1. Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Biochemistry
This programme is open to graduates and HND certificate holders in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Pharmacology and Physiology or related discipline. Public Health Workers with requisite years of experience shall also be eligible for admission.
2. Postgraduate Diploma in Nutrition and Food Science
This programme is open to degree graduates and HND holders in Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture, Pharmacology, Physiology or related discipline. Medical Doctors Nurses and other Public Health Workers with requisite years of experience in the field shall also be eligible for admission.
3. M.Sc/ Ph.D programmes in Biochemistry
Admission into this programme is open to graduates of University of Calabar or other Universities recognized by the Senate who hold at least Second Class Honours in Biochemistry, Chemistry or related discipline. Admission will normally be to the M.Sc programme in the first instance. Transfer to the Ph.D programme will be allowed on the recommendation of the Department to the Faculty Board and after approval by the Graduate School Board.
4. M.Sc, MPhil/Ph.D and Ph.D programmes in Food Science and Nutrition
Candidates for admission must normally possess one of the following: a First or Second Class Honours Degree in Nutrition, Food Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Physiology, Home Economics or Home Science, Community or Public Health, Microbiology, Nursing or Diabetes, or a professional qualification in Human Medicine or Veterinary Medicine or in Agriculture from a recognized University or any other qualifications adjudged to be equivalent to the above by the Senate of the University of Calabar.

Entry Requirements
In addition to having O-level requirement for admission into the University of Calabar, the candidates for admission into the Post Graduate Diploma in Physiology MUST have any of the following:
(a) NIST Final certificate or equivalent in Physiology/Pharmacology (at credit level or above).
(b) BSc. 2nd Class Hons Degree in any related science discipline (e.g. Biology)

Specific Requirements for M.Sc. Degree

It is also open to holders of MBBCh, DVM or BVM or a pass at credit level of in Postgraduate Diploma in Physiology.
(C) PhD
Specific Requirement for Ph.D. Degree
The programme is open to any candidate who has the following qualifications:
(i) Masters degree in Physiology with a minimum of 3.0 grade point average.
(ii) An outstanding performance during the M.Sc. Physiology programme. Such a candidate may be allowed to advance from M.Sc. to Ph.D. on the recommendation of the department and graduate committees to the Graduate School Board and after approval by the Senate of the University.

Entry Requirement
(a) Holders of Masters degree in Pharmacology with an accumulative grade point average of (CGPA) of not less than 3.0/4 or 4.0/5 or 60% from the University of Calabar or any recognized University or holders of Bachelor degree in Medicine, Dentistry, MD (Doctor of Medicine) or VMD (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) with Masters degree in Pharmacology may apply.
(b) Applicants are required to submit a one-page Mission Statement and to attend personal interview in the Department.
DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIOLOGY (PGD)
1. The course is open to Medial Graduates who are registered with the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council.
2. Candidates must have completed the National Youth Service Corps or possess exemption certificate.
3. The programme is hospital based, therefore, candidates shall be expected to pay practicing fees.
4. The duration of the programme shall be a period of 12 calendar months.
5. On completion of the programme, apart from the University examination, the candidates shall be eligible to sit for the West African Diploma Examination.

For BMLS (Chemical Pathology), CGPA of not below 2.75/4.0 or 3.50/5.00 is accepted. PGD in Chemical Pathology with CGPA of 2.75/4.00 or 3.5/5.00 is also accepted.
PGD in Chemical Pathology: The programme is open to candidates with the following qualifications: holders of MBBCh or its equivalent, First degree with second class lower in Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology and Haematology with CGPA not less than 1.50/5.00; FIMLT and AIMLT holders in Chemical Pathology with not less than B grade.

B.Sc or B.A Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, & all Social Sciences Degree of Second Class Lower. Consideration may be given to first degree holders in other discipline.
Admission Requirements:
(a) Students admitted to the programme will holders of good first degree from recognized Universities. At least 5 years public or private service experience will be required.
(b) Students admitted with a third class degree should, in addition obtain PGD in PA in relevant areas.
(c) Holders of degrees in disciplines other than Political Science would be required to take and pass three 300 and 400 level courses in the Department of Political Science. These courses will not count for credit toward MPA degree.
(d) To qualify for the award of the MPA degree, a candidate must successfully complete 30 credit hours of the 500 level courses.
MPAS Degree
Entry Requirements:
(a) Holders of a good first degree in Policy Studies, Public Administration, Political Science and other related disciplines from a recognized University.
(b) Holders of degrees in discipline other than those stated in (a) above.

Without prejudice to the general requirements for graduate admissions, applicants for admission into the M.Sc programme of accounting must satisfy the following requirements:
(d) Hold either a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting of the University of Calabar or its equivalent from other Universities recognized by the Senate, passed with a minimum of Second Class Degree (Upper division).
(e) Candidates with Second class degree (lower division) must have a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point grading system or 2.75 on a 4-point grading system.
(f) HND Accounting and Professional certificates in Accounting are not accepted for admission into the M.Sc programme of the Department.
(g) Duration: M.Sc programme runs on full time basis only for a minimum of 4 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters.

2. Holders of HND with a minimum of lower credit pass and/or professional qualification in administration disciplines with relevant post-graduate diploma from a recognized university with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale or 2.72 on a 4-point scale.
3. Candidates must have five credit passes at one or two sittings including English and Mathematics at the O-level, as basic requirement.
4. Candidates must have minimum of one year managerial/administrative experience.
5. Letter of recommendation or sponsorship from employer.
Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)
(a) A University degree with a minimum of third class or HND with a minimum of lower credit pass.
(b) Candidates must have a minimum of three years managerial/administrative experience.
(c) Reference letter from Head of Department or lecturer or sponsorship.
(d) Candidates must have five credit passes at one or two sittings including English and Mathematics at the ordinary level, as basic requirement.

Entry Qualification
ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR Ph.D
Without prejudice to the general requirement for graduate admission, candidates for Ph.D must satisfy the following conditions:
1. M.Sc Degree in Marketing from a University recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar
2. At least a ‘B’ grade in Masters research thesis.
3. Third Class and Pass in the first degree or degrees in non-cognate Marketing or closely-related areas are NOT acceptable for admission.
1. M.Sc degree in Marketing:
(a) B.Sc degree in Marketing or Management with a minimum CGPA as stated in the General regulations of the Graduate School and from a University recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar. Degrees in other fields and HND are not accepted for admission.
(b) At least a ‘B’ grade in his/her B.Sc research project.
(c) Reference letter from former Head of Department of lecturer. Candidates must have five (5) credit passes at one or two sittings including English, Economics and Mathematics at the O-level, as basic requirement.
